Ted DeKker is the most prolific Christian authors of our time and is becoming, in my estimation, the James Patterson of Christian Fiction as this guy is spewing out books left and right. In his latest novel, DeKker teams up once again with co-author Erin Healy as they have penned a fiery new suspense psycho thriller entitled “Burn”. Many reviewers are comparing this novel with DeKker and Healy’s first novel “Kiss” and yet I don’t find very many similarities between the two, with the exception of a mind boggling storyline and an outcome that doesn’t end the way you’d expect.
Janeal Mikkado is the daughter of Jason Mikkado who is on the leader of a small band of gypsies in New Mexico. One day Janeal is confronted by a powerful drug lord Salazar Sanso and given a proposition that puts Janeal in a situation that not only endangers her life but endangers the lives of the people around here. When things do not go according to plan the gypsy camp is attacked and set ablaze. Nearly escaping with her own life in tact Janeal sets out to put her past behind and start a new life where she can live for herself and pursue a life of success. Nearly fifteen years after the tragedy Janeal’s past comes back to confront and haunt her as she comes face to face with some individuals who are directly connected to her and the tragedy she was involved in. Ultimately Janeal must make a decision between good and evil in order to continue to live her life the way it was meant to be lived.
Unfortunately “Burn” did not hold my interest as much as “Kiss” did. The story was dragged out just a little too long and I felt some questions were left unanswered. Now I am certainly not saying this is a bad novel, it’s just not one of DeKker’s best. Regardless of my opinion I think “Burn” is a suspenseful, entertaining, and captivating novel that will keep capture you early on. DeKker fans will definitely enjoy “Burn” and I am looking forward to reading more works from Healy and DeKker in the future.
