I should start off this review by stating that I have not read any of the Camel Club series by David Baldacci. The reason I tell you this is because Baldacci’s latest novel DIVINE JUSTICE is the latest book in his Camel Club series which features the likes of John Carre/Oliver Stone. The great thing about DIVINE JUSTICE is you do not need to have read all the previous novels to actually know what is going one. David Baldacci does a great job getting the reader “up to date” on the who Oliver Stone is, but he does not belabor point, he gives just enough information about his past that gets the reader up to speed and connected with the character.
DIVINE JUSTICE takes place after Oliver Stone has just assassinated two high ranking government officials who had committed crimes against stone and had their “just rewards” coming to them. As Stone flees from Washington DC he takes a train to nowhere in particular and befriends young Danny Riker as he saves him from getting beaten to a bloody pulp on the train by some men who. Immediately Stone and Riker hit it off and eventually finds himself in the coal mining town Divine, VA. Hoping to blend into the scenery to keep the feds off his back Stone decides to spend some time in Divine. However Divine has some secrets of its own and eventually Oliver finds himself in the middle of one of Divines “best kept secrets” which ultimately could lead to him disappearing for good. All along CIA John Knox is tailing Stone in attempt to capture him for the crimes he committed but finds himself in an unlikely situation with Oliver that will forever change both of their lives.
DIVINE JUSTICE is a fantastic book! It was actually a breath of fresh air for me since the last three or four novels I read were duds. I am definitely interested in reading more Camel Club series novels in the future. Overall Baldacci’s latest novel is a great read. It has mystery, conspiracy and action all balled up into one book that is a little under 400 pages of sheer suspense. Whether you are fan of this series or a newcomer I would highly recommend you pick up a copy of DIVINE JUSTICE, you will be glad you did.
