I have been an avid comic book reader since I was a child. Growing up I read classics like Uncanny X-Men, Batman, Alpha Flight, Iron Man and many, many, many others. Like many I get a little leery when one of my favorite comic books is translated from physical pages to digital multimedia. Fortunately Marvel Comics values comic books and has the desire to maintain the integrity of the paper comic book so this is why the Marvel Knights Animation is perfect. According to Marvel Comics, “(Marvel Knights Animations) remains true to the heritage of panel-by-panel graphic storytelling, boasting groundbreaking illustrations, sensational soundscapes, and of course, the explosiveness of the Mighty Marvel Universe.” This is evident in the latest Shout! Factory release “The Astonishing X-Men: Dangerous” which releases April 10th, 2012.
From the mind of the ingenious Joss Whedon “Astonishing X-Men: Dangerous” is a comic book delicacy that should be enjoyed by all X-Men readers alike. With the death of a student at the Xavier Institute an unsuspecting adversary is working from inside the Xavier’s mansion to annihilate the X-Men’s existence. This enemy knows the heroes inside and out. It knows all their weaknesses and can predict their every move. This enemy wants one thing and one thing only. It wants the X-Men dead and it will stop at nothing to accomplish its task. Amidst all the fighting the group finds that they not only does this enemy want them dead but that have been betrayed by one of their own and it seems as though things will never ever be the same again.
The Astonishing X-Men: Dangerous is a great movie! It has it all, action, good story line, and a true comic book feel. If this is the direction comic books are heading in the future then I welcome it with open arms. Die hard fanboys and casual comic collectors like me should find this DVD to be an Xtraordinary addition to one’s collection.
