This new Star Trek collection features the second run of the series. During this run, a “century after Kirk & Spock,” the Enterprise is led by Jean-Luc Picard and Will Riker alongside o a host of memorable characters, including one played by that guy from Reading Rainbow. This collection offers a glimpse at the series through four pivotal episodes, The Best of Both Worlds (I & II), Yesterday’s Enterprise, and The Measure of a Man.
This collection, simply because of its short duration, is meant to broaden the world of Star Trek for fans of the new movie. The main draw is easily the The Best of Both Worlds episodes as they are longtime fan favorites from this run and feature Picard captured and assimilated into the Borg collective (which would provide the foundation for a feature film eventually). The other episodes are fun, simpler looks into the series, one featuring the potential offline-ing of the ships resident android, Data, and the other being a classic time travel episode.
Die hard fans certainly already have these, so they are obviously not meant for Trekkies or Trekkers. If you enjoyed this series and love watching it reruns but would never buy it, then this is a very affordable collection that you can pop in anytime. New fans may want to check this out as well because as you work your way through the franchise feature films, two of these episode figure prominently into the later features.
