If you ever met me you would not think that I have a soft spot in my heart for “chick flicks” but I do. I haven’t figured out why, but I really enjoy them. So when the request came to review the latest retail love story Confessions of a Shopaholic I jumped at the opportunity. This lighthearted romantic comedy couldn’t have come at a better time. With an unstable economy and many people uncertain about their future employment status we could use a little lighthearted financial comedy or maybe better yet we could all use a rich significant other to come bail us out in our time of need.
Becky Bloomfield has a shopping problem… She wants everything but has maxed out her 12 credit cards. As she walks down the streets of NYC the mannequins literally entice her with their latest fashion apparel draped over their plastic bodies beckoning Becky to come hither and spend. After being hounded for months by the city debt collector, the piles of unpaid credit card bills and the recent dissolving of the gardening magazine that employs her she wonders how she is going to get herself out from under this pile of debt. In a desperate attempt to land the job of her dreams at Allete Magazine. When the job gets filled internally she is given a tip that a financial magazine is looking to hire and through a variety of happenstances Becky gets hired as a journalist. The problem… she is in no position to give financial advice to anyone and better yet she has no experience in the financial world. But as luck would have it she writes an article to the common person that gets her national and international recognition and one would think her financial woes are over. Wrong! They just create new ones and Rebecca finds herself making some horrible decisions that could potentially ruin her friendship and love life. But fear not my good reader… We can’t have a sad ending now can we? You’ll have to watch it for yourself to see the nail biting conclusion (written with thick sarcasm).
Included on the disc are bloopers, deleted scenes and a music video by Shontelle. Disc two features a digital copy of the movie and I love this feature with many DVDs today. They are easily transferred to any iPod or handheld digital video player. Hopefully this becomes more and more common with DVD releases in the future without charging a higher price.
Overall, I thought Confessions of a Shopaholic was cute (said in my manliest of voices). I think it was a bit over the top at times but then if it wasn’t it would have made for “just another chick flick”. Isla Fisher is perfect for the role of Becky Bloomfield and believe she is what makes this a fun and watchable movie. Her character is so outrageous and loveable that it would be hard to say anything bad about her role. If you are looking for a lighthearted romantic comedy then I would highly suggest you check out Confessions of a Shopaholic.
