Deep Purple is one of those bands that I’ve always heard about but never really listened to aside form the massive hits that always get played on the radio. History, Hits, and Highlights has certainly rectified that situation though as I have been on a seemingly never-ending Deep Purple kick lately. This DVD contains footage from four versions of the band, including the Ian Gillan and David Coverdale fronted version of it.

The first DVD in this set is a look at the band’s History and Hits. It starts off with en excellent documentary that is fairly unique. It’s told through music and interview footage rather than by a Henry Rollins type voice narrating (as so many documentaries do). I have seen very few documentaries told this way, it’s very similar to books that compile interviews from a particular band and present it as an autobiography of sorts. I really enjoyed hearing form the band themselves and seeing video snippets from each era. The footage is great quality considering the time for sure. The best moment though is after legendary guitarist Ritchie Blackmore leaves the band  and the then frontman comments that he “doesn’t like Medieval Rock,” which, of course, is what Blackmore went on to pursue and is still pursuing.

The second part of Disc One and all of Disc Two consists of live performances, TV appearances, and rehearsal footage forms various versions of the band. It’s interesting to see how the dynamic of the band changed, particularly with each new frontman. A very young David Coverdale (who would go on to form multi-platinum rock act Whitesnake) is an obvious star even in this very old footage. His charisma seemingly made Deep Purple a different band, something purists may disagree with I suppose.

All the footage of excellent quality, making this DVD set a truly unique experience. Whether you love Deep Purple or are just interested in learning yourself on some Classic Rock history, this set is for you. Don’t miss out!
