Delgo

20th Century Fox

Delgo is a classic adventure tale in the tradition of great action films and folk tales prior to that. Freddie Prinze, Jr. and Val Kilmer are just two of the actors to lend their voices to this project but bring more than enough weight to it to make you at least interested in checking it out. The story revolves around a returning master of evil who was thought to be long passed. Only a goofball turned hero and the feisty princess of their land can save their entire race but it will take teamwork, determination, and more than a little luck for this unlikely band of world savers to triumph. The feature is a CGI affair and includes special features such as director commentary, deleted scenes, a very helpful introduction to the characters, an extra animated short, and a few other standard issue pieces.

What I really loved about this movie was the story. Yes, it is more than a tad cliché. Yes, it’s a story that has been told a thousand times over (probably more). But it is a classic plot with a huge heart and it will really draw you in if you let it. Freddie Prinze, Jr. is the perfect ne’er do well voice because his soft tones lead you on the journey and make the character much more believable than many other animated features I have seen. The drawback, for me, wasn’t the clichés but rather than animation. I’m not a huge fan of CGI to start with but if Star Wars: The Clone Wars is the new standard then Delgo pales in comparison. Overall if you enjoy classic story lines and enjoy modern looking animated films, you’ll find a good deal to like about Delgo.
