Let It Roll: Songs by George Harrison

Capitol Records

While there are a lot of George Harrison compilations out there to be purchased, Capitol Records have finally released a definitive collection in Let It Roll. This is the first career spanning collection of Harrison’s widely respected work. While he wasn’t the most artistic or the prettiest Beatle, few musicians would argue the fact that he was, by far, the most naturally talented of the Fab Four. Let It Roll is undeniable proof of that.

The collection opens with Harrison’s eighties smash “I Got My Mind Set On You,” a track often disregarded because of it’s contemporary pop feel and production. There is a solid reason this was a massive single and hearing it again reminded me of that reason. It’s an excellent pop song Same goes for the slightly more creative “When We Was Fab” from the same era. “My Sweet Lord,” a live version of “My Guitar Gently Weeps,” “All Things Must Pass,” and “Give Me Love (Give Me Peace on Earth)” round out the Harrison staples but with 19 songs in all there is plenty of room left for great things too often ignored. Tow more live songs are included and they are absolutely stunning (“Something” and “Here Comes the Sun”), making me wish that I could have seen Harrison live.  “This is Love” is another oft forgotten gem, opening with a beautiful slide guitar and featuring some of Harrison’s best vocal work. The Beatles’-esque “Rising Sun” is another wonderful moment.

If you are a George Harrison fan you must own this. Although you probably own all the songs already, the CD comes with a 28-page booklet of rare and never-before-seen photographs as well as liner notes by Warren Zanes. Additionally, each track has been digitally remastered by Giles Martin, and it really makes the early solo works shine. If you have never bothered to check out George Harrison’s solo work this is an excellent introduction to his worldview and music.
