It’s funny but sometimes you can just tell things are from Texas. In this case, it’s a trio of ladies calling themselves Girl in a Coma and their sophomore effort, Trio B.C. The album has a Western Swing feel to them that reminds of Patricia Vonne at times, but the sound is interspersed with some nice punk-inspired rock and roll which, more often than not, results in some fun, sing-along style punk anthems. Let’s just say that when you hear this, you’ll understand why the legendary Joan Jett signed them to her label.
The heavily western “BB” opens the album in a very misleading way. They certainly set you up for a Rockabilly record and then launch into the aforementioned punk/rock hybrid on “Static Mind.” “Baby Boy,” “In the Day,” and “Joannie In the City” hold the Rock and Roll side of things together while “In the Day,” “Pink Lemonade,” and “Vino” hold down the Western Swing style that sounds a bit like 50’s era Rock and Roll dressed up a bit as well. Really, Girl in a Coma has a pretty obvious split personality and that makes this record a hit and miss affair. Speaking as a Yankee, some of the Western guitar tones really grate on my nerves but die hard fans of this genre may not be so bothered by it.
Overall this is worth checking out if you enjoy Pop Punk, early era Rock and Roll, Rockabilly, or Swing influenced Rock and Roll. I’m not going to promise you you’ll love it but you’ll certainly regret not checking it out.
