“Grease is the word, is the word that you heard. It’s got groove, it’s got feeling. Grease is the time, is the place, is the….” C’mon you know the words, don’t you? Grease (1978) is one of the only musicals to capture the culture wholly. Everyone related in some way to these late twenty somethings passing themselves off as teens. Every male loved Olivia Newton-John as the sweet and innocent Sandy and every female melted when John Travolta hit the screen as Danny. The music was amazing, the actors and actresses a perfect fit, and the setting was as timeless as they come. We all went to Rydell High in some fashion. Now for the first time, the special edition (which came in T-Birds or Pink Ladies jackets in the DVD edition a few years ago) of this classic musical comes to BluRay.
This edition of Grease includes all the wonderful DVD bonus footage of the deleted and extended original scenes a tour of the thunder roadsters, choreography, and more. The main events though are the documentaries of the 25th Anniversary DVD launch party and the look back segment feature Travolta and Newton-John. They still look great together and there is an obvious chemistry between them, even now, that helped make Grease an iconic film.
The nitty gritty here though is how does this look and sound? BluRays are SOOO much better right? The answer in this case is a resoundingly loud “It’s the most, to say the least!” Grease has never looked as sharp as it does in this BluRay version and the audio is crystal clearing umimaginable ways. Given you’ve got a rockin’ home theater set up, you’ll feel like you are actually listening to a live performance through most of it. Grease is BluRay is sharp, focused, and unnervingly pristine in every way. Those things combined make this BluRay the DEFINITIVE version of Grease.
