When I first received this CD for review I thought, “Who is this new progressive rock band?” I later come to find out that these British neo-progressive rockers named IQ have been in the music scene for 28 years! Where have I been? Regardless, they are new to me and I find that IQ has a decent sound that I enjoy… it has a little but of an old school progressive feel to it and yet has a fresh revitalizing modern sound as well.
Frequency is the ninth studio album by IQ and their first in five years. Since I am not familiar with their earlier releases I have nothing to compare their latest release to. However when I listen to them I am mildly reminded of Marillion with an ever slight hint of Genesis. Highlights include the nearly 11 minute epic “Stronger Than Friction”, “Riker Skies” and opening title track “Frequency’.
Overall I would say IQ Frequency is a great CD that should be checked out by any fans who enjoy the sounds of the neo-progressive rock genre. Being a first time listener of the band with a nearly 30 year history I am very impressed and I am contemplating checking out the rest of their discography.
