Let me first say that this record is way overdue. Unlike many artists today, we last heard from Ms. Knapp during the prime of her career and most of seriously doubted we’d ever hear from here again as she seemed to find peace in things that didn’t involve commercially released music. She’s roaring back though, beginning with a co-headlining tour with Derek Webb and a spot on the revamped Lilith Fair tour and accentuated by a new album entitled, Letting Go.
Letting Go is a powerhouse record, much like her last effort The Way I Am. You could draw a lot of comparisons between the two musically, although I’d venture to say that this album is a bit “softer” overall. Lyrically they are very similar though, the main difference being that on The Way I Am Knapp seemed to struggle with her identity and on Letting Go she presents herself unadulterated – causing one to wonder what The Way I Am may have sounded like with a record label involved.
The best moments on the new album are when Knapp kicks it all into high gear with songs like “Dive In,” “Letting Go” (which sounds like it could have been an unreleased song from The Way I Am), and “Inside.” The latter in particular has a Melissa Etheridge kind of edge to it that brings something to this record that her previous efforts did not have. The softer side of Knapp is represented well here as well for the most part. Her inner singer/songwriter shines the brightest on songs like “Fallen” and the reserved “Better Off.” The piano laden “If I Made a Difference” is another new trick that has almost a Country tinge to it that again lends more dynamics to this record.
Overall, this is an excellent return to form for Knapp. She sounds fresh and ready to take on the world. The second half of the album is a little slow for my tastes but the songs are solid regardless. If you love the other albums, you’ll love this one. If you have never heard of Jennifer Knapp then you should start here as its her most well-rounded effort to date.
