Kleerup is the semi-alias of Swedish producer extraordinaire Andres Kleerup. Best known for his #1 UK hit single, “With Every Heartbeat,” (performed with pop songstress Robyn), and his work with Cyndi Lauper on her Bring Ya to the Brink album, he is ready to launch his brand new self-titled album. In addition to electronic instrumental tracks, the album features vocalists such as Lykke Li, Neneh Cherry, Titiyo, Robyn, and Marit Bergman.
What Kleerup delivers here is an uptempo dose of likable electronic-ish songs. It’s not always fit for the dance floor (though it’s all danceable in its own way) but it’s always crisp, clear, and immaculate sounding. As someone who is primarily a fan of rock and pop music, I find the songs with vocals much more enjoyable overall. “Longing for Lullabies” (featuring Titiyo) is great as is, of course, Kleerup and Robyn’s smash “With Every Heartbeat.” “3 AM” (featuring Marit Bergman) and its darker edge is clearly the runaway hit though. It’s beautiful, haunting, and expertly delivered. “I Just Want to Make a Sad Boy Smile” is one of the standout instrumental tracks, as is “Thank You For Nothing” (which has a one line vocal loop). Overall they are the two instrumentals that can go toe to toe with the tracks that contain vocals.
When all is said and done, this is a solid album to just relax to. There is no stress whatsoever on Kleerup’s latest offering. If you are feeling stressed then I suggest you take the world off your shoulders, get a nice cool glass of wine, and put this album on. You won’t regret it.
