For all the talk about artists like Lady GaGa, Christina Aguilera, and Beyonce, Kylie Minogue is the backbone of the female pop industry. Kylie releasing a new album is a worldwide event and Aphrodite (once again) finds her at the top of her already storied career. The album turns time back a bit and lets loose some hits meant primarily for the dance floor that will likely also attract anyone that is looking for something that plays to the Pop market while reaching far beyond the drivel that rules modern airwaves.
The album opens with a duo of excellent tracks, beginning with the hit single “All the Lovers, a smooth and gentle rally cry, and the more pulsating rhythm of “Get Out of My Way,” during which Kylie delivers her most commanding vocal performance in many years. The more dynamic “Everything is Beautiful” departs a bit from the straight dance floor approach. It’s a bit more adventurous than most of the album without being disruptive and, because of that, gives the album some depth. Its partner is the anthemic title track, reminding the world- musically and lyrically- just who the queen of Pop is these days (Hint- it’s not Madonna). “Better Than Today,” a poppier song that was debuted on her recent sold-out U.S. tour, is another highlight that dares extend beyond most songs on the album.
With over 60 million albums sold in her two decade career, Kylie has absolutely nothing to prove. It’s quite likely that that’s what makes Aphrodite such an elegant and amazing work. Every song here is full on Pop with heavy dance grooves that will make even the dorkiest fans want to bust a move by the time it ends. All hail the Aphrodite…Kylie Minogue!
