Originally released in April 2004, Mean Girls, now on Blu-ray, was a hit written as an adaptation from the book Queen Bee and Wanna Bees written by Rosalind Wiseman. The adaptation was written by Tina Fey (also in the film) and stars Lindsey Lohan, Rachel McAdams, and a host of Saturday Night Live cast and former cast members Tim Meadows, Amy Poehler and Ana Gasteyer to name a few.
The story follows Cady Heron, a teenager whom was home schooled in Africa as her parents were working as zoologists, as she enters “Girl World” in high school for the first time. She is quick to find that she is out of her element and befriends some artsy kids whom help her hatch a plan to sabotage the group of high class girls referred to as the “plastics”. The deeper she delves into this way of life the more she becomes caught up in the lifestyle. A continuous slew of back-stabbing and rumors fly around the school causing mayhem and debotury. When things get out of hand with a “Burn Book”, Cady realizes the error of her ways, and does what it takes to make things right again.
Extras include Director Commentary and commentaries from writer Tina Fey and Producer Lorne Michaels, featuretes, deleted scenes, bloopers and a few mini clips of the Mean Girls in their element. Although none of the special features are in HD, I was not alerted to any real difference as I watched, but the theatrical trailer was presented in HD.
As with all Blu-ray discs, the picture quality and sound are unmatched by the former release. And if the thought of seeing hot chicks in HD doesn’t grab your attention, guys, I don’t know what will. There is nothing like girls screaming and fighting with a proper surround sound system to catch your ears as well.
I was very surprised that I liked this film, and found myself getting caught up in the high school drama as if I were reliving that horror story. I even found quite a bit of the movie funny and was laughing aloud at times. Tim Meadows is brilliant, and has a true knack for acting and his delivery is awesome as always. If you enjoyed it the first time, you should certainly give it a go with Blu-ray and enjoy all the benefits HD has to offer.
