On the heels of her critically acclaimed new album, The Fall, Norah Jones continues to scratch at the box with this remix EP. Short on both length and convention, the fact that Jones was even interested in having something like this made opens up a much broader potential fanbase for her. I’d even include myself in that statement. While, I’ve been a half-hearted fan prior to this, the Chasing Pirates Remix EP is a bold statement.
The EP contains the title track in its album version as well as two remixes. The Santigold and Snotty remix is an electro-hop romp that will take Jones mesmerizing voice to dance floors across the globe while the Droogs remix has a more down-tempo feel about it, landing it somewhere between a sinister Hip Hop opus and a Beck song. The EP also features an exclusive track entitled “That’s What I Said” that has a very soulful feel to it that reminds me a bit of Macy Gray. There is also a NYC remix of the song brought forth by Adrock and Mike D. The remix has a very thin sound to it that is easily connected to Beastie Boys latter years work. I was pretty excited to hear this particular remix and wasn’t disappointed that it delivered in such a dull fashion. It’s easily the weakest moment here.
If you’ve never heard, or never enjoyed, Norah Jones music then I highly suggest giving this one a whirl. Overall, this remix EP will change the way you look at Norah Jones and maybe even make a new fan out of you.
