Ralphie May

Austin – Tatious

Image Entertainment

Known for his big girth and big laughs, Ralphie May has intrigued audiences over the years with his own brand of non conformist comedy. May has had a vast array of works from his stand up specials to appearing on a few TV sitcoms as well as a run on Last Comic Standing. Ralphie wrote and produced this special and specifically had it taped in Austin, TX at the Paramount Theater in front of a sold out audience.

From the introduction, I was expecting some hard hitting lines and gut busting visual humor, but was left a little flat as May began with a so-so set of relationship humor. I get it that everyone has their own take on relationships, and he did have his own twist on it but there is only so many ways to put a spin on it. Had I based the entire performance on this one aspect of the show, I would have stopped and found something more entertaining. Being a true fan of comedy, I continued my openness to give him a chance beyond the opening. I am so glad I did, May then ripped into what I consider to be his bread and butter, sexual and racial humor. With the snap of a finger, I was blown away by the relentlessness of his off the cuff style of delivery. It was almost like I was watching a different person on stage. From about the 20 minute mark all the way to the impressive 1 hour and 40 min conclusion, I was riddled with bursts of loud laughter. I mean I was whole heartedly enjoying this version of May. He makes no apologies for his views and opinions as he talks about his experiences in life and his views on the Blank-American identification process of the politically correct section of our great country. The crowd follows his every direction and responds well to his uncensored tirades. Overall, I would say it is well worth watching this performance for the better part of the hour twenty I felt like was captivating, but by all means, check out the first part as well, it just wasn’t my cup of tea. If they would have just edited the first part out, and put it as an extra, which there are none, It would have served as a much better experience.
