Relentless

Dean Koontz

Bantam Books

I have a short list of all time favorite authors and Dean Koontz would probably be at the top of that list.  I have been reading his books since I was in high school (about 25 years) and I rarely have come across one of his books that I have not enjoyed.  Being that I am such a big fan of his work I inevitably have higher and higher expectations for each of his new novel releases.  Needless to say when I received his latest novel Relentless in the mail I tore right into this book and I did not put it down until the suspenseful conclusion.  However I wouldn’t categorize this as one of his best novels I certainly would not label it as his worst.  I think if I were to label it anything it would be a good book with a decent storyline with a unique twist to it.  Simply put, it’s an average book.

Author Cullen “Cubby” Greenwich is a suspense writer and he has just written one of his best selling novels and critics are praising it across the globe.  Well, with the exception of one.  Sherman Waxx is the country’s most revered book critic and he thinks Cubby’s book is atrocious and writes a scathing review.  Greenwich is none to happy about this review and everyone advises him to “just ignore it”.  Unfortunately Cubby does not take this advice and he decides he will try and sneak a peek at this anonymous critic.  As chance would have it he comes face to face with Waxx in the restroom and says one word to him.  From this point on Waxx decides it is time to deal with this snooper and he begins a reign of terror that has Cubby, his wife Penny, his son Milo and their dog Lassie running for their lives.

As I stated earlier Relentless is an average book but this does not mean that it is not a fun and entertaining read.  I think fans of Koontz will all enjoy this novel and even if you are not a fan this is a fun read.  What I really like about it is that Koontz does not just specialize in writing horror fiction.  He likes to mix suspense, humor and terror all together that makes for a very unique author.  I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys light hearted suspense novels.  It is an easy read and one that will entertain you from beginning to end.
