The Audition must be one of the better kept secrets of the Victory Records roster. While requesting some other record, Victory’s publicist kindly included The Audition’s third record, Self-Titled Album, in the package. I’m glad she did as this is quality Pop Rock of the highest order and I likely would have continued my life in ignorance had she not included it.
Self-Titled Album has more hooks than a meat packing plant. For starters you have to crank up this album really LOUD to get it. It just doesn’t give off the same vibe without the proper volume. The Disco-tinged “The Way That You Move” explodes when the chorus hits and you’ll unquestionably be trying to sing along by mid –song. “Stand On Your Feet” is another similar moment with an excellent driving chorus that will stick in your head for days. Even the semi-cheesy “Los Angeles” rises above the odds in the capable hands of The Audtion.
Overall there isn’t a whole lot to think about here. This is the kind of upbeat, positive, hook-laden rock and roll that you have to work really hard to dislike. If you are ready for a new “crank it up and drive fast” summer album then Self-Titled Album is what you are looking for.
