I have to admit that I put off writing this review I bit longer than I intended. Truth be told, everything about NYC’s The Coloursound sounds familiar yet is extremely hard to describe. It’s a welcoming vibe that is so comfortable being left of the mainstream that it almost becomes mainstream because of it. Reclaim is the band’s latest EP and my first exposure to their music.
Reclaim is the combined effort of a half-dozen songs that nod to both the Classic and seventies Art Rock scenes but also the early nineties Alt. Rock/Power Pop scene bands like 4 Non-Blondes, Jellyfish, Blind Melon, Chagall Guevara, and their ilk. Although you certainly wouldn’t recognize them as copying any of those bands, you can definitely hear enough elements to make comparisons on songs like “Slowdown,” “Strange City,” and “The Waiting Hours” (a great song about the frustrations of trying to “make it”). The highlight here is the ultra-catchy Rock and Roll swagger of “We’re On Fire” though. It’s simply one of those songs that you start singing before you’ve even finished your first listen.
Overall, if you like any sort of Classic or Alt. Rock or Power Pop bands you should check these guys out. Honestly, the production is a little weak and it hurts the songs a bit. With a little production polish, these songs could be major hits with little help from the music industry powers that be. The songs more than sell themselves and that’s reason enough for anyone to give these guys a solid listen.
